The Padres season is winding down, but there are still reasons to tune in to games every night. Tonight one of those reasons is the long-awaited and highly-anticipated return of Casey Kelly to the mound as a starter in the opener of a three-game set against the Diamondbacks.
Kelly underwent Tommy John surgery in 2013, and a setback from his surgery kept him sidelined for the 2014 season as well. He spent most of this season pitching in the Padres' minor league system, until September roster expansions allowed him to rejoin the big league club for the first time since 2012. He pitched once before tonight, a two-inning relief appearance on September 19th where he allowed one run. Kelly pitched one game against the Diamondbacks in 2012, his only time ever facing them. It was one of his worst career starts as he gave up six earned runs on eight hits (including three homers) and lasted only 2 1/3 innings.
What to look for in Casey Kelly? Good command of FB to both sides. CV good, but has had trouble landing on occasion. Lots of balls in play.— Corey Brock (@FollowThePadres) September 26, 2015
Going opposite Kelly in the series opener will be Rubby De La Rosa, who is hoping for a repeat of his latest outing. He made his best start of the month last Friday, going five innings of scoreless, one-hit ball. He did walk four batters and hit one with a pitch, but struck out five along the way. The right-hander is also hoping to build off his success against the Padres this season. He won all three of his starts against San Diego, pitching to the tune of a 1.80 ERA through 20 total innings.
