It's that time of year when the Padres' best case scenario is playing spoiler. They beat the Giants via walkoff last night, and tonight they can knock them farther out of the playoff picture as well as throw a wrench into Madison Bumgarner's quest to win 20 games. He's sitting at 18 now, so he needs to win both this and his next, final scheduled, start. That's not to say that Bruce Bochy can't or won't finagle some shenanigans to give him another shot if he loses one of these last two starts, but the point is that I do not want him -- or his team, for that matter -- to win tonight. But you already knew that.
Ian Patrick Kennedy, on the other hand, is not going for 20 wins; the best he'll be able to manage this year is half that. Kennedy is 8-15 with a 4.29 ERA, but he's 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA over 26 innings in five games against the Giants this year. I'm not going to get into the details of all those games because this preview is already late enough as it is.
Bumgarner has been pretty Bumgarnery against the Padres. He's 2-1 with a no-decision to go along with a 2.36 ERA in 26.2 innings this year. His lifetime numbers are 8, 5, 3.26, 22, and 132.2; I'm sure you can figure out which category each of those belongs to. Again, I'm in a hurry.
So, yeah, watch or listen to the game -- on FOX Sports San Diego or The Mighty 1090, respectively -- and come back here to hang out in a late-season Game Thread.
