Tonight's ballgame started as a pitchers duel, then turned into a stressful back-and-forth affair, before wrapping up with a walkoff bookended by birthday boys Matt Kemp and Jedd Gyorko. The two combined to go 6-for-10 with 3 runs and an RBI.
Andrew Cashner got off to a rough start, walking Angel Pagan and Alejandro de Aza to start the game. He retired the next two batters, but a single from Brandon Crawford drove them home. Cash shut the Giants down after that, going five more innings and allowing just one more hit and three more walks. That kept the Padres in the game for their first comeback in the seventh inning.
Jedd Gyorko led off the inning with a single, and Derek Norris drew a walk to put the tying run on base. Josh Osich came in and struck out the next two batters, but Yangervis Solarte doubled to right to knot the game at two. That didn't last long: Jarrett Parker led off the eighth by homering off Joaquin Benoit to put San Francisco up by one.
The Friars staged another comeback in the bottom half of the inning. Brett Wallace hit a one-out single, and Gyorko followed up with another single of his own. Norris moved them over to bring up Travis Jankowski. It looked like Bruce Bochy gave the signal for Sergio Romo to intentionally walk him, but Romo missed it and instead gave up a two-run double to the rookie Padre.
Craig Kimbrel came in to wrap things up in the ninth, but it didn't go quite as planned. An error by Kemp put Buster Posey on first, and a double by Brandon Crawford put the winning run in scoring position. Kimbrel buckled down and struck out the next two batters, but a wild pitch allowed Posey to score before he could get the third out. Kemp made up for his mistake with a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth, and Jedd brought him home to wrap up the win.
Ian Kennedy will try to seal a series victory tomorrow. First pitch at 6:10 PM.
