Game 152 Preview: 09/23 Padres vs. Giants

Former Friar flame-flinger Fake Feavy Jake Peavy will return to the Petco Park mound tonight, taking turns on it with one Andrew Burton Cashner. Peavy pitched at Petco from its third game ever in 2004 through mid-2009 while wearing home whites, and then again this April for the first time as a visitor. He took the loss that day, putting up a row of fours- four runs (all four earned) on four hits over four innings. He did even up his season record against his first team earlier this month, allowing just one run (it was earned) on two hits over seven innings. All of the Padres' runs off Peavy this year have been by way of the home run; former teammate Wil Nieves tagged him for a grand slam, and Justin Upton hit a solo shot for his twenty-fifth homer of the season just 12 days ago. Peavy's small sample size ERA of 4.09 against the Padres in 2015 is right in line with his overall mark of 4.08.

This will be Andrew Cashner's second time sharing a mound with Peavy in the past two weeks. Back on the eleventh of this month he got knocked around for five earnies on nine hits and five walks in just shy of five innings. He was a bit better in his other start against the Giants, back in May. He lasted six innings, allowing "just" four earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He left that game with a stone cold 3.16 ERA which is up to 4.25 now. On the bright side, he has a 3.58 mark in a dozen home games; a rather dimmer fact is that it's over twice that -- 7.59 -- in his pair of games against the Giants.

Cashner is coming off a win in his last start, when he allowed three earned runs to the Diamondbacks on seven hits and two walks while striking out half a dozen. Peavy, meanwhile, is riding a three-game win streak; he has a 2.89 ERA over that stretch, with 15 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.

Game time is 7:10pm. As usual it can be viewed on FOX Sports San Diego or heard on The Mighty 1090.
