Game 147 Preview: 09/16 Padres @ Diamondbacks

Andrew Cashner and the Padres go for the series win in the finale at Chase Field.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The bullpen continued its struggles last night and a great outing by Tyson Ross went to waste in the Padres' loss to the Diamondbacks. Andrew Cashner has had his share of struggles this season too, but hopefully he can put up a strong performance tonight to help San Diego take the rubber game of the series.

Cashner's most recent start was one of his worst of the season. He gave up five earned runs and only lasted 4 2/3 innings against the Giants. Where he did succeed, and where he's succeeded for much of the year, was in the strikeout column. Cashner collected seven strikeouts despite his short appearance, bringing his season total to 146 strikeouts through 166 2/3 innings of work.

The right-hander has had mixed results in four appearances against Arizona this season. Through a combined 24 innings, he's allowed 15 runs, but only seven of those were earned, giving him a 2.63 ERA against the Dbacks.  But those eight unearned runs (out of a total of 22 unearned runs this season) have resulted in a 1-3 record in those four outings.

Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray was also hurt by unearned runs against the Padres this season, but to a much lesser extent. In two appearances against San Diego, he gave up seven combined runs (five earned) and took the loss both times. His last time out he got his first winning decision in 11 starts, pitching five shutout innings against the Dodgers. But he continued to struggle in terms of his efficiency, throwing 95 pitches to get to that 5-inning mark.
