Coming off a 3-11 homestand, the Padres need something big to push out of the month and clear the September schedule in a positive way. They started their 9-game road trip today in AT&T Park against the Giants. But they didn't start off on a good foot.
The birthday boy Andrew Cashner didn't have much of a birthday bash. Instead, he was bashed for 9 hits and 5 earned runs, despite striking out a good 7. He lasted 4 innings and two-thirds, and Odrisamer Despaigne didn't do much to cover up the wound with his relief effort. Instead, Ody allowed four more runs for a whopping San Francisco 9.
On the flip side, Justin Upton hit his 25th home run of the season in the second inning. It was very shortly piled on by 9 opposing runs, but it was really nice for the moment.
It's an alright consolation birthday gift for Cashner, but for the rest of us, it wasn't much of a celebratory night.
The Friars will try again tomorrow with Ian Kennedy fighting a literal bum.
