The Padres and Phillies close out their three-game set this afternoon. The latter have already clinched the series win, but San Diego will try to prevent a sweep by salvaging the final game today.
Andrew Cashner will get the ball for the Friars, hoping for a better result than his last outing. He went six innings and kept the Brewers to two runs, but the Padres' lack of offense meant he was tagged with his 11th loss of the season. But hopefully offense can give him some more support tonight and he can continue his success against the Phillies. Cashner has pitched eight times against the Phillies in his career - six relief appearances and two starts. In those eight outings, he is 2-0 with a 1.25 ERA.
Throwing and hoping to secure the sweep for Philadelphia will be Jerome Williams. The veteran righty has seven career outings (all starts) against the Padres, going 3-3 with a 2.18 ERA. This will be Williams' fourth start back since coming off the disabled list. Since being reactivated, he is 0-1 with a 4.60 ERA. But his most recent outing was a relatively successful one. He threw five innings of one-run ball, tying a season-low in runs allowed while tying a season-high in strikeouts with six.
