Game 110 Preview: 08/07 Padres vs. Phillies

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Padres are coming off an initially exciting, but ultimately disappointing, ten-game road trip which they split 5-5. Tonight they're back in San Diego to kick off a three-game series against the Phillies.

It'll be the Padres ace, James Shields, on the hill for the opener at Petco Park. Shields is seeking his first win since July 17th, though he hasn't pitched poorly in his three starts since then. During that winless stretch, he kept opponents to five total runs through 18 innings of work. The right-hander is 2-0 in three starts all-time against the Phillies, though he gave up a combined 12 runs on 23 hits in those outings.

Aaron Nola doesn't have any prior experience against the Padres, or much prior experience at all. The rookie right-hander will make just his fourth career appearance tonigh, hoping to continue his hot start and extend his winning streak to three games. Over his first three starts, Nola is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA, though his sole loss in his major league debut was arguably his best performance of the three. He went six innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six, but was tagged with the loss. In his two wins since then he gave up a combined six runs through 12 2/3 innings while collecting nine strikeouts.
