In the offseason James Shields got paid like he could be the team's ace, there was talk that Andrew Cashner had ace potential, but the hurler that has consistently had the best performances is 28 year-old Tyson Ross. Tonight he tallied his 10th win on the season while racking up 7 strikeouts and only allowing 2 hits, 2 walks and no runs over 7 innings. Surprisingly, this was only his second start this season where he held the opposition scoreless and got a win. The previous time was also against the Rangers, but in Texas back on July 12. This start, however, was a bit better and might be considered his best on the season. The one that rivals it was a complete game against the Diamondbacks on June 20 where he allowed just one run.
Tyson Ross also contributed to the mini-offensive explosion The offense started in the 3rd inning with speed and timely hitting. Travis Jankowski singled and stole second base and Yonder Alonso drove him in. Then Matt Kemp, continuing his second half renaissance doubled over the head of Will Venable to drive in Alonso. Venable, by the way, got a nice welcome back to San Diego. Alonso would score again to start a sixth inning rally when he snuck by the catcher to score on a Jedd Gyorko sacrifice fly. Matt Kemp was also on base at that time after walking earlier and would score on a Cory Spangeberg double. That's when Tyson Ross got involved. A single up the middle by the moundsman allowed Spangenberg to come around and slide under a tag at home plate for the team's 5th run. A sixth would score on a Yangervis Solarte RBI single. Later, in the 8th inning, Jankowski would triple and score again when pinch hitter Brett Wallace doubled him home to make it 7-0.
The bullpen outside of Craig Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit has been quite shaky lately, so with a 6 run lead going into the 8th inning you wondered how much of the lead would hold. In their previous win, the lead went from 9-1 to 9-4. In this game, that would not be the case. Bud Norris sent the Rangers down in order in the 8th and in the 9th to close out the game for the Friars. The win made them 3-1 against the Rangers this season and tomorrow they can look to win the season series against the Texas club.
