Last night's victory has the Padres looking to clinch another series. Tonight in game 2 they'll send their ace James Shields to the hill against a familiar face in rookie Matt Wisler.
Shields is coming off one of his worst outings of the season. He gave up five runs on six hits and four walks through 6 1/3 innings of work against the Reds. The fifth Cincy run, which ended up being the difference in the game, came home on a balk by Shields, which he attributed to miscommunication. But he followed the error by retiring ten straight batters.
Shields got a no-decision at Turner Field in June. He also gave up five runs in that game, though only four were earned, and he lasted only 5 1/3 innings, so hopefully he'll have better luck this time around.
Wisler has been fairly successful so far in his rookie season. He's 5-2 with a 4.74 ERA in his first ten starts, though he's stifled a bit since the All-Star Break. This will be Wisler's first appearance against San Diego since they traded him prior to Opening Day.
