The Padres are coming off a historic night and are looking to clinch a series win in Colorado. They'll turn to Andrew Cashner while Jon Gray gets the start for the Rockies in game 2.
Cashner is 4-12 on the year with a 4.09 ERA. But while his pitching hasn't been incredibly sharp this season, he's also been a victim of poor run support and poor defensive support. Cashner is averaging almost one unearned run per game, having allowed 21 total unearned runs this year. Lately, the Padres offense hasn't come through for him either, scoring just one run in each of his last three outings. Hopefully last night was an indication of their overall production this series and they can give Cashner some of the same run support they gave Tyson Ross last night.
But Cashner hasn't had that luck against the Rockies in his career. In ten appearances (five starts) all-time against Colorado, the right-hander is just 1-3 with a 5.91 ERA. He has yet to face them this season while the Padres have dominated the season series, going 8-2 in the first ten meeting between them.
Gray has yet to face the Padres ever. The rookie right-hander made his Major League debut on August 4th and tonight he makes just his third career start. He's been solid in his first two, keeping opponents to four runs (three earned) in ten total innings of work. But he is still without a decision as a major league pitcher.
