Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

After showing some glimmers of hope prior to the trade deadline, the Padres have sputtered since then and now find themselves eight games below .500. Tonight they look to put an end to a five-game losing streak as they open up a series against the Reds at Petco Park.

Ian Kennedy will get the start, hoping to improve on a 5-5 record and 5.26 ERA at home this season. He has improved at Petco Park lately, allowing only three combined runs in 12 innings over his last two home starts - both wins. Kennedy has also been successful against the Reds in the past. In six career starts against Cincy, he is 4-1 with a 2.40 ERA.

Rookie pitcher David Holmberg will be making the start opposite Kennedy in tonight's opener, making his third start of the year and second ever outing against the Padres. Holmberg is 1-0 in his first two starts this season, allowing a combined four earned runs in 11 innings of work. Prior to this season, he made seven appearances in 2014 and one in 2013 - his major league debut against the Padres. He only lasted 3 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks.
