Game 84 Preview: 07/05 Padres @ Cardinals

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The Padres couldn't come up with a victory  to clinch the series yesterday, but a series win is still in play today as they complete the for - game set in St. Louis.

Ian Kennedy takes the mound in the finale, hoping for better defensive support than he's gotten lately. The righty had allowed one earned run in each of his last two starts, but thanks to defensive errors,  opponents scored ten combined runs in that span.

And Kennedy will need all the help he can get against the Cards, so have had his number in the past. In six career starts against them, he is 2-4 with a 9.00 ERA.

Lance Lynn has had better luck against the Padres in his career. In for Pecos outings against San Diego, he is 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA. Lynn had his best month of the season in June, going 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA in four starts. But the Cardinals haven't been very generous with run support with Lynn on the mound. In seven of his 14 starts this season, he's received two or fewer runs of support from the Cards offense.
