The Padres began their second half of the season with a big win over the Cardinals. With a series split in the bag, they'll try to lock up a series win this afternoon and keep their winning streak going.
Odrisamer Despaigne toes the rubber in game 3 today, hoping to turn around his road struggles. Since making his major league debut last season, Despaigne has posted a 5.47 ERA on the road, compared to 2.96 at home. His one prior appearance at Busch Stadium was one of his worst. He gave up five runs - all earned - and only lasted four innings. That was preceded by a 5-2/3-innings, six-earned-run outing against the Cards at Petco Park.
Despaigne went winless (0-3) in five June starts, posting a 5.59 ERA in that stretch. His last time out he threw 5 2/3 frames, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits - including two homers) against the Diamondbacks.
Carlos Martinez had a much better month in June, and looks to carry that success into July as he takes the mound for St. Louis this afternoon. The right-hander went 4-1 with a 2.18 ERA in five starts last month. His sole loss was a result of poor run support and an imperfect bullpen; he tossed 6 2/3 innings and allowed only two runs (one earned) in that start. Martinez has pitched against the Padres three times in the past, but today will be his first time facing them as a starter. In those previous relief outings, he combined for 3 1/3 innings and gave up six earned runs on ten hits and three walks.
