Last night's game marked the end of the first half of the 2015 regular season for the Padres. Thankfully they ended it on a positive note with a comeback extra-inning win fueled by the long ball. Hopefully they bring that winning spirit into the second half of the season, which starts today with game 2 at Busch Stadium.
It'll be Andrew Cashner on the mound hoping to lead the team to their second straight victory and lock up at least a series split in St. Louis. Cashner should be looking forward to his first July start after having his worst month of the year in June. The right-hander went 1-2 with a 6.55 ERA in six June starts, though he did end the month with a solid win. In his last start he kept the Diamondbacks to two runs on eight hits and striking out six while tying a season-long seven innings of work. This will be his seventh career time facing the Cardinals, but his first as a starter. In his previous six relief appearances, Cashner went 0-1, pitching a combined 7 1/3 innings and giving up three runs on ten hits.
Cards starter Michael Wacha, on the other hand, will be facing the Padres for the first time in tonight's matchup. He's put up some strong numbers in 2015 so far, going 10-3 with a 2.77 ERA through his first 15 starts. And he's pitched especially well at home, not only this season but throughout his career. In 25 starts all-time at Busch, Wacha is 11-2 with a 2.47 ERA. That includes a 4-1 record and 2.89 ERA in six home starts in 2015. The righty celebrated his 24th birthday on Wednesday, so he'll be looking for a late birthday win tonight.
