The Padres will go for their third straight win and take the series against the Marlins this afternoon in the finale of the four-game set at Petco Park. Odrisamer Despaigne will make his 15th start and 20th overall appearance of the season, pitching opposite the former Friar Mat Latos.
Despaigne has struggled for much of the season and hasn't notched a win since May 31st when he threw eight innings of one-run ball against the Pirates. That's a string of eight outings (seven starts) through which he's gone winless (0-4). Despaigne, who's in his sophomore season in the big leagues, has never faced Miami before. His last time out he gave up six earned runs in five innings against the Giants in one of his worst outings of the season.
Latos has made three prior starts against his former team since they traded him away in 2012. He was dominant in those three outings, allowing only three combined runs on 11 hits through 20 total innings, but still has an 0-1 record to show for it thanks to poor run support from the Reds offense. He's hoping his Marlins teammates can get something going at the plate. It hasn't been the best season for Latos, who is 4-6 with a 4.48 ERA in his first 15 starts, which were punctuated by injury in May and June. But he's been much better lately, going 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA while collecting 38 strikeouts over his last six appearances.
