The Padres evened up their series against the Marlins last night in a game of home runs. The win put an end to a three-game skid and hopefully tonight they can get a winning streak going and clinch at least a series split against Miami.
Ian Kennedy gets the ball for San Diego in game 3 of the four-game set. After having a rough start to his season, he's seen some improvement on the mound over the past couple of months, posting a 2.98 ERA in nine starts since the beginning of June. He has a 3-4 record in that stretch, but he kept opponents to just eight earned runs through those four losses. The right-hander has been successful against the Marlins in his career, going 3-1 with a 3.11 ERA in six lifetime starts against them.
On the mound for Miami will be an unfamiliar face for the Padres. David Phelps will be making his first career appearance against San Diego this evening. It'll be his 20th outing of the year, but 16th as a starter. In those 16 starts, Phelps is 4-6 with a 3.74 ERA, but he comes into tonight's matchup having lost each of his last three starts.
