The Padres kicked off the second half of the season with a 4-2 win over the Rockies last night, extending their winning streak to three games. Tonight they'll try to lock up the series as they send Tyson Ross to the mound in game 2.
Ross made one previous start against Colorado this season, back in April at Coors Field. He kept the Rockies to two runs on six hits and four walks in five innings of work, getting tagged with a loss. The right-hander has yet to notch a win against the Rockies, however, going 0-5 in eight career appearances (six starts) against them.
Ross' 2015 season hasn't lived up to his 2014, but he's been pitching a lot better lately. In his past five starts, he's 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA, allowing only six runs while opponents have batted .155 in that stretch.
Chad Bettis will get the start for Colorado, hoping to improve on a 5-4 record and 4.91 ERA this season. Bettis has faced San Diego four times in his career, but tonight will be just his second start against them. He pitched a total of 6 2/3 innings in those first four outings against the Padres, allowing only five hits and no runs.
Bettis is coming off a start against the Braves that saw him give up three runs on six hits in six innings of work. One start prior to that, he made his worst start of the season, a 2 1/3-inning performance during which he gave up ten earned runs on eight hits, including four home runs.
