Game 60 Preview: 06/09 Padres @ Braves

The Padres look to stay above .500 behind their ace in game 2.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

James Shields continues his quest to stay undefeated this afternoon when he takes the mound at Turner Field. The Padres already locked up their first win of the series, and hopefully will clinch a series split or better tonight in game 2 against the Braves.

Shields has been the undoubted ace of the staff since his Padres debut on Opening Day, and he remains the most consistent and reliable starter in the rotation. Ten of his twelve starts have been quality starts, and he holds a 7-0 record while posting a 3.58 ERA this season. Pitching in the AL for the entirety of his career before joining the Padres, Shields has only faced the Braves twice in his career. Both of those previous outings were losses - he gave up seven runs on 12 hits through 12 combined innings of work, though he also struck out 11 batters in those two games.

The Braves will send rookie right-hander Mike Foltynewicz to go up against the veteran Shields. Foltynewicz made his Atlanta debut on May 1st, and has been impressive  in his first seven starts. He's 3-2 with a 4.29 ERA and 43 strikeouts in that span.
