Padres draft HS CF Josh Magee in the 5th round

The Friars' 4th selection in the draft is a two sport standout with speed.

In the 5th round the Padres looked to Louisiana, specifically Franklinton, Louisiana, to select CF Josh Magee. The word on him is that he's a 5'10", 180lb 18 year old speedster with a bat that looks advanced for a player coming out of high school. It seems like the Padres draft one of these speedy CFs in most years. Last year it was Auston Bousfield, in 2012 it was Travis Jankowski and Mallex Smith and 2010 had Rico Noel. All of those guys were college guys though who made an impact with their legs quickly since their bats were advanced enough to hit in the lower minors. Hopefully that is also the case with Magee out of high school since, as earlier stated, his bat is supposed to be advanced. His numbers this past season certainly backed up that he can hit, but who knows how they translate.

When you look up Magee, it is easier to find video of him playing football than it is for baseball. However, despite being a standout CB for his high school, he did not receive a lot of recruiting offers, but eventually did make a commitment to Southern Miss. Perhaps signing could be an issue, but I don't believe that will be the case. Baseball looks to be his future.
