The Padres started their road trip on a positive note with a 6-2 win over the Reds yesterday behind a solid pitching effort from Tyson Ross. Tonight the Padres will switch things up a bit and give the ball to Andrew Cashner, pushing Odrisamer Despaigne's start back a day and allowing Cashner to get back on the mound on five days of rest.
Must Reads
Cashner's latest outing was... an anomaly. Historic, actually. The right-hander struck out 12 batters, but allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits and didn't escape the fifth inning. Unfortunately it earned him his eighth loss of the season. Hopefully the stars can align for him tonight and the Padres can get that offense going to give him some run support, something he's been lacking for most of the season.
Cashner has made eight career appearances against Cincinnati, though only two of those were starts. He's 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA all-time against the Reds.
Opposing Cashner will be another Reds rookie, Michael Lorenzen, making his eighth major league appearance overall and his sixth start. He's 1-1 in his previous seven outings, posting a 3.06 ERA overall and a 2.45 ERA as a starter. In his most recent start, he kept the Nationals to only two runs in 6 1/3 innings of work.
