With a win in yesterday's series opener at AT&T Park, the Padres improved to 5-3 against the Giants this season. They'll try to lock up a series win tonight in game 2 of the three-game set, which will pit Ian Kennedy against Ryan Vogelsong.

Kennedy is making his 13th appearance of the season, looking for his fifth win. He gave up one run on four hits and a walk in each of his last two starts, totaling 13 innings of work. He also kept the Giants to one run in his most recent meeting with them, a seven-inning, five-strikeout effort in San Francisco on May 6th. He also opened his 2015 season against the Giants at home on April 9th, but exited the game after only 2 1/3 scoreless innings and was put on the disabled list a day later with a hamstring strain. Career-wise, Kennedy boasts a 10-4 record and 2.42 ERA in 22 starts against the Giants, a trend he'll try to continue in tonight's outing

Vogelsong comes into tonight's game 5-5 on the season with a 4.38 ERA. He lost his first three games in June, giving up 12 combined runs through 16 1/3 innings. But his most recent outing was a success. He kept the Mariners scoreless on three hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings of work, striking out six batters along the way. In 20 career starts against the Padres, Vogelsong is just 5-6 with a 5.14 ERA. That includes two starts this season which, much like Kennedy's against the Giants, went very differently from one another.  On April 11th at Petco Park, he allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and lasted only 3 2/3 frames. But less than a month later, on May 5th at AT&T Park, Vogelsong tossed seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits and issuing two walks.
