The Padres couldn't hang last night, allowing the Diamondbacks to give James Shields his first loss of the season and increase the gap between the two teams in the NL West standings. Hopefully they'll have better luck against southpaw Robbie Ray tonight and give Tyson Ross some run support to even up the series.
Ross is coming off two straight losses and has only one win to his credit in his past six starts. Over that stretch, he's posted a 3.86 ERA and collected 35 strikeouts while walking 16 through 35 innings. In a start against Arizona at Chase Field on May 6th, Ross went six innings and allowed only two earned runs on five hits, but he didn't factor into the decision. Career-wise, Ross is 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA in ten outings (nine starts) against the Dbacks. Six of those appearances (five starts) took place in Phoenix, where he has a 1-2 record with a 4.34 ERA.
The rookie Ray is making his career debut against the Padres and just his fifth outing of the season. He's been brilliant so far since joining Arizona's rotation, going 2-1 with a 1.09 ERA through his first four starts. His most recent was his best work yet. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and issuing two walks against the Angels.
