Game 70 Preview: 06/19 Padres @ Diamondbacks

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Last week, the Padres dropped to fourth place in the division. Tonight, they begin a three-game set against the new third-place team in the NL West.

James Shields will take the mound for the opener at Chase Field. It'll be his fourth career start against the Diamondbacks, and third in Arizona. Shields went 2-1 with a 6.50 ERA in his first three appearances against the Dbacks. The worst of those outings took place earlier this year. He was tagged for five earned runs, including giving up a season-high four home runs, in six innings of work. But otherwise, Shields has been mostly worthy of the title of ace. He remains undefeated (7-0) on the season with a 3.59 ERA and 104 strikeouts (third in the NL).

Going for Arizona will be Rubby De La Rosa, who's looking for his third win against the Padres this year alone. He allowed a total of three runs on nine hits in 13 combined innings of work over those first two meetings. De La Rosa is coming off one of his best starts of the season, n eight-inning shutout in San Francisco against the second-place Giants. Overall this season, he is 5-3 with a 5.27 ERA.
