Friars fall in familiar fashion following firing

The final score of 9-1 was a little more extreme that what would called be called a typical Padres loss, but their were plenty of familiar storylines in San Diego's loss to the Athletics.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

In the Padres first game since the firing of Bud Black, you hoped you would see something different. I mean, there's no logical reason you would, but you hoped. Instead, the lineup looked the same, the players looked the same and the play on the field looked the same. The only difference was a lot of chatter during the game about the firing.

Tyson Ross was on the hill for the Padres and he certainly looked the same. Much of this season Ross has been giving up too many walks, too many hits and sometimes too many runs. His 1.53 WHIP and 3.81 ERA (compared to 1.21 and 2.81 in 2014) tell you that. He never gets shelled, but he gets worked hard and the offense has a tough time time keeping up. It was third inning when the A's started stringing a few together. Nothing crazy, but they dinked and dunked their way to 3 runs in the frame via 4 singles and a walk.

First time through the order looked pretty familiar as well. No hits for the Padres. Derek Norris earned a walk in the second and Alexi Amarista earned a walk in the 3rd. Fortunately, that was just enough to turn the lineup over in the 3rd inning. On Will Venable's second opportunity to face former teammate Jesse Hahn, he almost got hit by a pitch. A replay review decided that he was not (although that seemed pretty debatable) and instead he hit a double deep to CF. That scored Amarista who, after his walk, was moved to second on a Tyson Ross sacrifice bunt.

Another familiar part of Tyson Ross' repertoire is the strikeouts. Those were there along with the walks and hits as he whiffed 6 over the 5 frames he worked. However, all those pitches needed to get those Ks combined with the bases on balls and dinks and dunks conspired to get him out of the game early. It also led to another run in the 5th to make the score 4-1 when he exited the game. Despite the start seemingly familiar, 4 runs allowed actually tied a season high. He hadn't allowed that many since April 28 against the Astros.

Another unfamiliar thing was 2 innings from the recently recalled Nick Vincent. He allowed a couple baserunners, but held the scoreline for those 2 frames. Oakland's Ben Zobrist found things familiar though as he earned his 4th walk of the game with Nick Vincent on the mound. I don't know if there's a equivalent nickname for that like how 4 strikeouts is a golden sombrero, but it's an interesting feat.

Cory Mazzoni would relieve Vincent. Mazzoni just got recalled himself in place of Wil Myers who is back on the DL. Mazzoni would also get in on the party of doing familiar things. He entered a game the Padres were losing an made it worse. He allowed a walk and two hits before even recording an out, which already resulted in an A's run. Two outs and a Ben Zobrist (who apparently was now tired of walking) single later he surrendered a grand slam to Stephen Vogt to seal the loss for the Padres.

The Padres offense wasn't completely quiet in this one even after the lonely run in the 3rd. Melvin Upton pinch hit in the 7th and got his first hit as a Padre. The hit moved Derek Norris, who singled earlier, to third base. That chased A's starter Jesse, who pitched well, in favor of a lefty to face Will Venable with two outs. The elder Upton would steal second to add teeth to the threat, but a Venable ground out gave it no bite. Spangenberg singled and Matt Kemp walked in the 8th to try to spark an answer to Oakland's big inning against Mazzoni, but nothing came of that as well, but nothing came of that either. Alexi Amarista would single in the bottom of the 9th, but with nearly no chance of a comeback due to being down 9-1, the next two hitters struck out to mercifully end the game.
