The Padres evened up the series against the Dodgers last night, and today they'll give the ball to their ace, James Shields, to try to lock up the series win. Meanwhile, Mike Bolsinger hopes to improve on an already impressive sophomore campaign with Los Angeles and extend the Dodgers' lead over the Padres in the NL West.
Shields remains undefeated on the season after a no-decision in his most recent outing. He wasn't his sharpest against the Braves his last time out, giving up five runs (four earned) through 5 1/3 innings at Turner Field. He's 1-0 in two starts already against the Dodgers this year, allowing five combined runs in 13 innings of work. Shields hopes to tack on his eighth win of the season this afternoon and get the Friars back over that .500 mark.
Bolsinger has been a pleasant surprise for the Dodgers this year, going 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA over his first seven starts. One of those starts - his only career appearance against San Diego - was his strongest outing, by far. He tossed an eight-inning one-hitter and struck out eight batters en route to a third consecutive win.
