Odrisamer Despaigne is getting another opportunity to start for the Padres after Brandon Morrow was placed on the 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation. After just losing out on the fifth starter spot to open the season, Despaigne was able to make two starts after Ian Kennedy suffered a sprained hamstring. He took advantage and put together a couple of really impressive outings, going 2-0 with a 1.97 ERA and eight strikeouts through 13 2/3 innings before Kennedy returned.
The better of those two performances took place on April 14th against the Diamondbacks, whom Despaigne will be facing again tonight. He kept the Dbacks to one tun on two hits and two walks over seven innings, striking out three along the way. Despaigne hasn't been quite as effective since returning to his bullpen role. He's posted a 6.39 ERA in four relief appearances this season, so hopefully he can get back into his groove as a starter over these next couple of weeks.
Rubby De La Rosa will get the start for Arizona, coming off a really rough outing. All five of the runs he gave up to the Dodgers came in one inning. He allowed two batters to walk and gave up two home runs - a solo homer and a grand slam - all within the span of about 10 or 15 minutes.
However, in two career starts against the Padres, Rubby is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA. And that win came on April 13th of this season. He did give up three runs on six hits that time out, but was backed by eight runs of support.
The game gets underway at 6:40 pm PT tonight.
