Hedges debuts, Padres lose 2-0, but don't get no-hit.

Coming off a 3 game win streak and sweep of the Rockies, fans were hoping for more than just rooting for the team to get a hit. But here we are again versus the Giants and worrying about making the national sports news for all the wrong reasons.

You'd be excused if in the early goings of this Padres-Giants tilt you didn't notice that Madison Bumgarner was holding San Diego hitless. Part of that was because the Padres were putting some runners on base early. Wil Myers got on due to an error to lead off the game. In his second at bat he walked and advanced to second on a throwing error by Bumgarner that occurred on a pickoff attempt. Jedd Gyorko would get on by an error to start the 5th. Meanwhile, for Padres fans, Tyson Ross' pitching struggles served as an ample distraction.

In the first Ross only allowed a Pagan single, but his inability to adequately hold runners led to Pagan stealing second and Ross having to retire Posey with a runner in scoring position. In the 2nd, he allowed a Brandon Belt double and a Justin Maxwell single to begin the frame. Maxwell would swipe second to make it 2nd and 3rd with no out, but Ross escaped unscathed. In the 3rd, he would allow two runs and made it look like he would allow even more as he lost control over many of his pitches. The first came from Angel Pagan single and the second came from a bases loaded walk. A couple of singles from Madison Bumgarner and Joe Panik in the 4th made Tyson have to get out of a another jam in order to maintain the 2-0 deficit.

Down a couple of runs, the pressure should have been on the Padres to plate some of their own. However, they first needed to get a hit and remove that monkey off their back. Memories of Jonathan Sanchez in 2009 and Tim Lincecum in 2013 and 2014 were starting to creep in. Social media was starting to take notice of Bumgarner's bid as well. Justin Upton to lead off the 7th inning seemed as good a candidate as any to break it up and a little flare to left did just that. Yangervis Solarte would sneak one past the SS to tack on, but the next 3 hitters failed to do any further damage and the scoreboard still showed a goose egg in the runs column for the Friars.

Bumgarner would face one more batter in this game, Padres prospect Austin Hedges in his first at bat. The 22 year old catcher pinch hit for Ross and came up about as empty as most of the Padres hitters. He struck out on four pitches. Just barely checked his swing on the one that wasn't ruled a strike. Sergio Romo would relieve Bumgarner and wipe out a couple of Padres like the 2014 World Series MVP never left. As would Santiago Casilla, complete with another runner getting on base via an error. But no more hits, no more runs, no more win streak. Two-zip final.
