Padres 4, Rockies 2: You can stop panicking now

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

If you've been kvetching about something during the Padres' recent slump, this game was for you. Tired of Wil Myers not taking pitches? He drew two walks tonight. Terrified of the bullpen? Brandon Maurer and Craig Kimbrel combined to throw three perfect innings. Defense got you down? Tonight was an error-free performance, with a few impressive grabs. Everything went according to plan as they beat the Rockies 4-2.

Myers got the team on board quick. He led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk and then scored on back to back singles by Derek Norris and Matt Kemp. That 1-0 lead wouldn't last long, though. Colorado capitalized on Brandon Morrow's one-out walk to Carlos Gonzalez in the top of the second. Former Friar Nick Hundley sent CarGo to third with a single, and a ground out by DJ LeMahieu sent him home to tie the game at 1-1. Morrow would make one more mistake in the third, giving the Rockies a 2-1 lead on a solo shot to center field by Charlie Blackmon. But Morrow continued to shine at the back of the rotation, putting up his fourth quality start of the season.

The Padres didn't let Morrow's work go to waste, as they came up big in the bottom of the fifth. Myers led off the inning with another walk, and went to third on a double from Norris. Justin Upton followed that up with a 2 RBI single to put the good guys back on top 3-2. Upton got caught trying to take second on the throw home, but when you have the game-winning hit, you get a little leeway.

A little insurance came along in the sixth inning, with Clint Barmes starting a small two-out rally on a single to right. Will Venable drew a walk pinch hitting for Morrow, and Myers added a single to his pair of doubles to score Barmes for the final run of the night. With a 4-2 victory, the Padres win the series and will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon behind James Shields. First pitch is at 1:10 PM.
