Game 38 Preview: 05/16 Padres vs. Nationals

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Padres will try to shake off last night's 10-0 loss and regain the advantage in the series tonight as they take on the Nationals in game 3 of the four-game set. It'll be Andrew Cashner on the mound against Washington's ace, Max Scherzer.

Cashner will try to avoid a fifth straight loss while helping to keep San Diego above the .500 mark on the season. The right-hander will hope to build on an impressive (and MLB-leading) streak 21-game home streak in which he's allowed no more than two runs per game. This will be Cashner's 50th career outing at Petco Park. He has a 12-12 all-time record in San Diego with a 2.05 ERA in that span. In nine lifetime outings (four starts) against the Nats, Cashner is 2-2 with a 3.76 ERA.

Scherzer has only faced the Padres five times in his career, and twice at Petco Park, where he is winless so far. He's 1-2 with a 3.41 ERA overall in those five starts. Scherzer goes into tonight's matchup having won his last two consecutive outings. He's averaged over seven innings of work in each of his seven starts this year, including a one-run, seven-frame performance against the Diamondbacks on Monday.
