Padres 8, Diablos Rojos 0: Friars wow at FanFest

Allan Henry-USA TODAY Sports

Well, the Padres sure put on a show today. Over 20,000 fans went down to Petco Park for FanFest, and they were treated to an exhibition against Los Diablos Rojos. Ian Kennedy led an impressive pitching staff to a 2-hit shutout. Los Diablos didn't even pick up a hit until the fifth inning. Kennedy worked quick today. In his three innings of work, he allowed just one walk and struck out three. Seven other pitchers picked up the final six innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Their out pitches were working, too, racking up 6 Ks.

Meanwhile, A.J. Preller's new-look outfield was totally unfazed by their new home, going 5 for 9, scoring twice and picking up 4 RBI along the way. Justin Upton was the only Padre to pick up an extra base hit, with a 2 RBI double in the third. Matt Kemp and Wil Myers both knocked out a pair of singles, and Yonder Alonso joined them in the multi-hit club today. Everybody looked in fine shape for Monday's opener against the Dodgers.

On a strange side note, an old familiar face played for Los Diablos Rojos today. Former Padre Ruben Rivera started the game in right field. True to form, he went 0 for 2 and struck out once.

We'll see you back here at 1:10 PM Monday, when James Shields takes the mound against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. Baseball is back!
