That's it, everybody. Spring training is finally over, and the Padres are heading home with one more Cactus League victory to their credit. Tyson Ross tossed three scoreless innings in his final start of the spring, holding the Brewers to two hits and a walk. And, well, we're used to that. Great pitching, no runs, it's an old story.
But today, and, hopefully, the rest of the season, the story was offense. Four different Friars went 2-for-3 today, scoring 4 runs and picking up 3 RBI. Three of those players were big acquisitions by A.J. Preller: Matt Kemp, Will Middlebrooks, and Derek Norris. The fourth was Yonder Alonso, who appears to have regained his form after an injury-plagued 2014. Alonso started the hit parade today with a triple in the first inning. Kemp and Norris joined the extra base club with doubles of their own, and Middlebrooks showed off with a pair of doubles. All of that added up to 6 runs for the good guys. The Brewers made an admirable effort to stay in the game, hammering Jason Lane for 4 runs and scoring a fifth off Frank Garces, but the good guys won out today.
There's one last exhibition left before Opening Day. Following FanFest, Ian Kennedy takes the mound against Los Diablos Rojos de Mexico. First pitch is at 2:00 PM, and if you can't be there in person, you can watch on Fox Sports San Diego or listen on 1090 AM.
