The rumors first started trickling late Wednesday that the Chicago Cubs would call up uber-prospect and former University of San Diego standout Kris Bryant for their next game. And wouldn't you know it? The Padres were coming into town to play the Cubbies for his debut. His callup is kind of a big deal. Many preseason hot takes were fired off around the country criticizing or defending the North side Chicago team for planning to send Bryant to minors to the start the season. It garnered a lot of press for a player who had yet to adorn a big league uniform in a game that counted.
Today, the long national nightmare is over. Bryant is now a major leaguer and will bat cleaniup for Chicago. Presumably right behind another slugger with San Diego connections, Anthony Rizzo. Ain't that a kick in the head? MLB's social media is already abuzz with 23 year old Bryant's coming out party:
