Alex Torres was traded today to the Mets for Cory Mazzoni.  Torres is the guy that wears the enormous protective hat while pitching and sometimes when he's having a bad hair day.  He's also that guy that Mets legend Keith Hernandez thinks is scared and should get a dog because he wears a large hat. Shhh, don't ask questions it all makes perfect sense to Keith.

The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later from the New York Mets in exchange for left-handed pitcher Alex Torres. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.

A.J. Preller picking up another right handed player, you don't say?

Mazzoni, who could pitch in a Cactus League game this week, likely will open the season in Triple-A El Paso's rotation. He brings four pitches, three of which the Padres grade as plus offerings.

"He's got a pretty big fastball, very good slider and then a change-up that's probably above-average as well, in our scouts' estimation," Padres Assistant General Manager Josh Stein said. "He has the ability to get right-handers and left-handers out, someone we think has a starter's repertoire."

Noticeably absent is any mention of Mazzoni's hat size.

While talking to our buddy Wonko, he made some thoughtful comments that bear repeating:

Torres was a problem for the Padres because he's not reliable and is out of options. Moving him helps with bullpen flexibility. They can now try a couple of options for the LH reliever, or just go without at times.  The downside is that Torres, despite his unreliability, is more experienced than any of his LH replacements. Oh and Mazzoni helps the system depth at SP, which was lacking after the offseason trades. He's a legit prospect.
