With just over two weeks until Opening Day, Ian Kennedy looks like he's ready to roll. In four innings against the Kansas City Royals, the Padres' fourth starter held the reigning AL champs to one unearned run on three hits and a walk. Let's rewind a second for emphasis: that's your fourth starter. Exciting, right?! The rest of the game was, well, less exciting. The team fell behind when Kevin Quackenbush gave up three runs in one inning of work, and things got really bad when Dale Thayer let two Royals across the plate in the top of the ninth.
The offense wasn't much help, either, going 5 for 30 off Royals pitching. Their one run came off former Friar Chris Young in the the second inning. Justin Upton led off the inning with a double to left, before advancing on a ground out from Will Middlebrooks. And then Upton scored in the least dramatic way possible: Young balked. And that was the extent of the hitting tonight.
You can hopefully watch a better game tomorrow afternoon. Brandon Morrow gets the start against the Diamondbacks at 1:05 PM. Fox Sports San Diego will have the telecast, or you can listen on 1090 AM.
