The Padres claimed Pinto off waivers from the Twins on November 20th. The former "catcher of the future" for Minnesota became one of four catchers on San Diego's 40-man roster, but it was clearly not meant to be. With no minor league options left for Pinto, the Padres designated him for assignment this past Monday to make room for left-handed pitcher Buddy Baumann, who signed a one-year deal with the team this week.
Despite a once-hopeful future for Pinto - he was a Top-100 prospect just a couple years ago - he grew a reputation of below-average defense with offensive numbers that have faded with each season. It seemed unlikely that he would see time at the big league level with the Padres in 2016, unless something major happened, and our own Wonko even predicted he would be waived prior to Opening Day.
