San Diego Padres GM AJ Preller announced today that he's still doing his holiday shopping when he signed left handed relief pitcher Buddy Baumann for the 2016 season. He could find himself a home in the Padres bullpen or live on a bus with the AAA affiliate. We'll know more in Spring Training. Baumann came up with the Royals. I'll say this, it's nice having a Buddy back on the team.
#Padres sign left-handed pitcher Buddy Baumann to a one-year, major-league deal, while designating catcher Josmil Pinto for assignment.— Max Wildstein (@MaxWildstein) December 21, 2015
In 2015, Baumann held opposing lefties to a comically feeble .148/.225/.222 batting line. His 2013-14 numbers against lefties weren’t quite as dominant, but he still held same-handed opponents to an OPS around .600 in that time.
To make room for Baumann on the 40 man roster, catcher Josmil Pinto was designated for assignment. Pinto was the "catcher of the future" in the Twins organization at one point, but it turned out that it was a dystopian futures where robots enslave humans and catchers can no longer hit, so that didn't pan out.
