Pad Squad holding open auditions at Petco Park

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Once upon a time I wanted to be on the Pad Squad. That's actually how I discovered Gaslamp Ball over five years ago. I googled "Pad Squad" and right at the top of the list were two or three GLB posts about Pad Squad Carrie (Prejean). I went to high school with Carrie so the links caught my interest and I clicked on one, only to be thrust downward into a wondrous land, like Alice following the White Rabbit.

I've since relinquished the desire to join the Pad Squad, but I think they're good people. And now they're looking for new members. The Padres are holding open auditions to join the Pad Squad tomorrow at Petco Park.

Registration begins at 8:00 am, with auditions kicking off an hour later and continuing until 5:00 in the afternoon (with an hour break for lunch). Open tryouts will include something called "photo presence," interviews and public speaking, performances, and a quiz on baseball knowledge. For those who make it to the second day of tryouts, it looks like it'll be much of the same thing, but while wearing a Pad Squad uniform.

Candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria: Brand Essence, Public Speaking, Performance, Physical Fitness, Baseball Knowledge.

The Padres website also notes that women should wear "form-fitting" tops and shorts (nothing loose or baggy allowed) while men can just wear t-shirts and shorts (they don't specify if clothing should be tight or loose). Weird.

You can find the rest of the details here. Maybe we'll be seeing one of you Gaslamp Ballers slingin' tshirts and foam balls at the crowd next year!
