The cat's out of the bag. The Padres want to make A.J. Preller their next General Manager. No matter how hard Chairman Ron Fowler tries to stuff the cat back into the bag, the news and the cat are out. From the look of things on Twitter, people are excited and/or snarky about the decision.
Here's the thing, I don't know a lot about baseball operations or scouting. I don't know much about hiring a General Manager of being a a General Manager either. The people that do know probably don't express their opinions on Twitter. But then again maybe they do. I'd say that the favorable public opinion has increased my confidence in the Padres organization. Dare I get my hopes up that the Padres will one day be good?
I'm sure once the Padres hold a press conference this afternoon announcing their hire more opinions will flood the internet. For now it's 100% fresh on the Tomatometer.

"He cares, he's good at his job, the guy is locked in with what he's trying to do to help baseball players get better"
@JonahKeri
Preller has GREAT rep re: developing prospects
@JimCallisMLB
Would be a great hire for @Padres. Tireless worker, terrific evaluator.

"Very, very smart. Awesome worker. Dynamic thinker/worker. Will make a difference. Endearing guy."
@RJsFro
Based on what Ive read Im a fan of Preller. However we know very little about the actual process & can only hope they picked the right guy.
@Jazayerli
I was wondering why so many tweeps complaining about SD naming AJ Preller its new GM; then I realized they're all Rangers fans. Good sign.
@JohnSheaHey
Good for #padres hiring A.J. Preller as GM. Good guy, international scouting strength, aggressive, likes being behind scenes. That will end.
@JHamrahi
If all the rumors about A.J. Preller becoming the San Diego GM are true, the #Padres immediately got better.
@InjuryExpert
Hearing Preller already has list of people he wants in his new Padres front office. And the names I've heard are very, very smart.
@SDUTPosner
I have no doubt AJ Preller is qualified. Padres fans must now hope people who hired him give him some resources & then stay out of his way.
@FollowThePadres
A talent evaluator + international experience. A.J. Preller has that and more.
@ProfessorParks
Hell yes. Smart choice SD.
@MickeyKoke
Anyone not excited about Preller I'm assuming is a zombie.
@jjcoop36
If reports are true very nice hire by the Padres. A.J. Preller is the right mix of smarts, acumen and scouting.
Darren Smith
He's high reward hire.
San Diego Padres make smart move in hiring A.J. Preller as general manager - MLB - SI.com
Preller has the track record to offer hope that he can make the system even more productive — particularly via international means — but the team’s limited resources nonetheless make competing with the NL West’s heavyweights a daunting task.
