Seth Smith signing is rotten, so far

Denis Poroy

The reviews are still coming in but I thought I'd just give you a sample of the hot takes while they're still hot.  I'm personally going to consider this signing "FRESH".  I think the Padres have lost confidence in their ability to trade talent for prospects or at least I've lost confidence in them.  So the best bet is just to keep the talent if they can.

Seth Smith has been carrying this sh_t Padres team on his back all season long.  He's like one of those weird parrot guys that allows his bird to shit all over his back in public places and doesn't even care or acknowledge the fact that his back is covered in avian excrement.

Padres Continue To Be Weird, Extend Seth Smith | FanGraphs Baseball

But it’s just weird. A rebuilding team without a GM extending an aging, limited player over a timeline in which they won’t win anyway doesn’t really fit the idea that the Padres do understand that they need a new direction.

Let's see what the media and bloggers are saying, shall we?  Vote for yourself in the poll at the bottom.

This transaction is the equivalent of the Johnny Depp stinker "The Rum Diary".

This signing is losing its freshness quickly.  It's dropped to 36% much like Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

2 years/$13mil isn't that bad for Seth Smith. But if Padres dangled him as sell-high, might've been best hitter on the market. I'm confused.

Oof. Why?

Given that Seth Smith accounts for 3.0 of the Padres' 3.3 WAR by batters, I'm good with a 2-year extension.

Padres announce two-year deal with Seth Smith (plus club option for '17) ... First piece of the "reset." Like the move. Love the timing.

Rotten_medium@PadresJagoff
Happy to keep Seth Smith around because he's good and all, but sad that the needed total rebuild looks like it won't happen now.

sign Seth Smith to a two-year extension. Great news.

Seth Smith won't be traded now. It is nice to see hard work and production get rewarded.

Look at their lineup and tell me they need to gamble on another project pitcher more than they need to gamble on a hitter.

Rotten_mediumThe (sort of) Puzzling Seth Smith Extension | Padres Public
On the surface, this isn’t a bad move. But the circumstances surrounding it — the fact that the Padres made the deal just days after firing their general manager (who acquired Smith), without a current GM in place, on a team that’s nine games under .500 and should be trading it’s eldest overachievers for youth — make it a bit of a head-scratcher.

get rid of Byrnes and then pull off a classic Byrnes move? I don't get it.

Rotten_mediumPadres, outfielder Seth Smith agree on two-year, $13M extension - MLB Daily Dish
To think that Smith can improve his stock would be foolish, as he has only once topped 2.0 WAR in a season once prior to this year, and is generally regarded as a sub-par defender.

The larger question, it would seem, is whether the contract makes sense for San Diego. Even after a recent run of good play, the club remains 10.5 games back in the NL West and 8.5 out of the Wild Card. Smith looked to be an attractive trade chip in the run-up to the deadline, with his pop from the left side of the dish already drawing calls.

Just now seeing Seth Smith got a contract extension. That's...um...well, it's something.
