One-game wonders Blaine Boyer and Billy Buckner designated for assignment by Padres

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

It's kind of old news at this point since it happened before the game, but I thought I'd make mention of the Padres designating Blaine Boyer and Billy Buckner for assignment anyway. These moves happen left and right, but this pair was significant to me for a couple of reasons.

The first thing I noticed, which is probably the first thing that jumped out to everyone, was that both players' first and last names start with a 'B'. That brings the total of Padres players with matching initials up to 54. While I was updating that post from last December to include their names I went ahead and removed Josh Johnson's name since he never ended up... yeah, you know what happened.

Secondly, both Boyer and Buckner appeared in only one game apiece with the Padres. If either of them goes elsewhere, never to return, they'll join the short list of six Padres one-game wonders. Hector Ambriz also pitched in just one game for the Padres earlier this season before being designated for assignment, but he's back at AAA El Paso and pitching well, so we likely haven't seen the last of him.

Since this post is ostensibly about roster moves, I should mention that Tommy Medica and the newly-acquired Troy Patton took their places on the 25-man roster. Both appeared in today's game.

...and scene.
