Tyson Ross pitched his heart out tonight, giving up just a single run on 3 hits and 3 walks. He also struck out 8 in his 7 innings on the mound. Unfortunately, Twins starter Phil Hughes matched Ross at every turn. Hughes threw 7 shutout innings, allowing only 7 hits while racking up 7 Ks. Are you tired of seeing the number 7 yet?
If you're a fan of offense, this game didn't get remotely interesting until the top of the sixth. With one out, Joe Mauer walked. He followed that up by stealing second. Well played, Mauer. Because hits are for suckers, he advanced to third on Trevor Plouffe's ground out before scoring on Chris Parmalee's sac fly. No hits, one run. Baseball, everybody! But just for good measure, Plouffe did hit a solo shot off of Dale Thayer in the eighth inning. And that's how you win a ballgame while being outhit 2 to 1.
The Padres have now been swept for the first time this season, but does it really count if it's only two games? Eric Stults will try to stop the bleeding as the Cubs come to town tomorrow, and he'll be wearing a sexy throwback uniform to boot. First pitch is at 7:10 PM.
