The Padres started hot tonight, with Robbie Erlin retiring the side in order in the first and getting immediate backup from the offense. Will Venable knocked a leadoff double into the left center gap. He was followed by a trio of singles from Alexi Amarista, Seth Smith, and Jedd Gyorko. Bam. Instant two-run lead.
Unfortunately, it didn't last. Three singles from Troy Tulowitzki, Wilin Rosario, and D.J. LeMahieu in the second cut the lead in half. Tulowitzki and Rosario did more damage in the fourth, opening with a double and a single. A sacrifice fly from Nolan Arenado knotted it at two. Erlin did his best to hold the line in the fifth, striking out Juan Nicasio and Clint Barmes to start the inning. But a single by Michael Cuddyer and a walk to Carlos Gonzalez got him pulled in favor of Tim Stauffer. That didn't work so well, with Stauffer giving Tulowitzki a free bag before Rosario hit the longest tenured Padre for his third single of the night. Cuddyer scored, and that was it for the night.
A pair of runs wasn't enough for a win tonight, but Andrew Cashner takes the mound tomorrow. If there's anybody that can eke a win out of a low score, it's him. First pitch at 7:10 PM.
