Padres 5, Rockies 4: Ugly Wins Are Still Wins

Denis Poroy

It was a wild game with an even wilder finish, but our Padres prevailed thanks to some sloppy work by the Rockies. Eric Stults had a rough night, giving up 4 runs in his 5 innings. Only 3 of those runs were earned, but Stults's own throwing error played a part in that.

The friars started clawing back in the bottom of the fifth. Yonder Alonso led off with a single, but it looked like he might be stranded at first as the Rockies quickly retired the next two batters. Then Tommy Medica came up to hit for Stults, hitting an RBI double to put the good guys on the board. Everth Cabrera followed up with a double of his own. Alexi Amarista launched a screamer into the right field wall for a triple to bring the Padres within one. Michael Cuddyer was injured crashing into the scoreboard trying to reign it in, and we hope he has a speedy recovery.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rex Brothers issued walks to Xavier Nady, Seth Smith, and Yonder Alonso to load the bases with two outs. I could tell you what happened next, but it's better if I just show you.

Sometimes you earn the win, and sometimes the opposition just gives it away. They all look the same at the end of the season.

Robbie Erlin will try to lead the Padres to their second series win tomorrow at 7:10 PM.
