The Padres after 9 games

We heard all offseason from both GM Josh Byrnes and Manager Bud Black about how important it was for the Padres to get off to a good start to the season.  With both the Dodgers and Giants in the division, if the Padres slump early they could be buried by May.

Well they haven't started off particularly hot.  They're 3-6 in the first 9 games, but surprisingly that doesn't mean certain doom for this team.  If you look at past Padres seasons there are plenty of teams that have started out equally as bad and some of them rebounded to become mediocre to good.

The 2010 and 2006 Padres both started out 3-6 and turned out to be pretty good teams, with 90 and 88 wins respectively.  On the other hand the inaugural Padres team in 1969 started off 3-6 and ended an all time worst 52 wins.  It's probably too early to be able to tell if this a good team or not.  I'm guessing they'll be pretty mediocre.  But look at it this way, they're one win ahead of the 2012 and 2013 teams so at least we're seeing some improvement.

It's worth noting that the 3 best teams in Padres history, all with over 90 wins, all started hot.  They sit at the top of this list after 9 games.
