Tony Gwynn continues to receive cancer treatment but also to coach

I heard a few months ago that Tony Gwynn's health had deteriorated again.  A friend of mine talked to a close associate of Gwynn's. My friend asked about Gwynn's health and the associated just lowered and shook his head, not saying a word.  Then a few weeks later I saw someone on Twitter mention that Gwynn had done a signing and there was an announcement letting his fans know to be patient with him because he had just undergone surgery.  Now Gwynn has gone public with his recent setback, but he remains strong and is determined to coach at SDSU when he can.

I love Tony Gwynn.  I know that you all do too.  It's hard to see him like this with his face swollen and wrapped in a bandage, but you can still hear the strength in his voice.  Say a prayer for him.

"Earlier in the year, I got here when I could get here," said Gywnn. "The last three weeks or so I’ve been lucky. I’ve been able to be here every day. My strength is good and seems like they’re going in the right direction, but with cancer you never know."

It's amazing to me that even when Gwynn is struck with adversity, he relates it to baseball and uses it as a teaching tool for his players.

"The one thing I tell them, it’s like baseball. If you have the right attitude about it, usually good things happen. Sometimes it’s hard standing here with this bandage on, and all this stuff, but underneath I’m doing good. I’m doing really good," he said.
