Padres hire Sam Geaney as director of player development

Padres General Manager A.J. Preller announced this morning that he has hired Sam Geaney as Director of Player Development.  He'll replace Randy Smith who was removed from the role last week, but stays within the organization.

"We’re excited to have Sam join our staff," said Preller. "He has a smart baseball mind and a strong work ethic that will help shape our player development philosophy."

Geaney, 29, joins the Padres after serving in the Oakland Athletics organization for the past nine seasons. He most recently served as coordinator of international scouting for the past three seasons where he was responsible for overseeing the scouting and signing of players throughout Latin America and the Pacific Rim.

Maybe this makes me an ageist but I'm way too focused on Geaney's age.  These baseball executives just keep getting younger and younger.  Maybe it's because I was dumb when I was 29.  That's when Dex and I started blogging about the Padres.  Ever since then it's been one bad decision after another.

Let's hope this move both improves the Padres player development and destroys the Athletics'.  Two birds with one stone.
