Let the offseason roster machinations begin. The first move had to come quickly with Everth Cabrera's 50 game PED suspension coming to an end. In order to make room, backup C Chris Robinson had to be designated for assignment. Robinson is now on waivers where any team can pick him up. Afterwards he will likely be released, but he could return to the Padres minor leagues.
Robinson had a nice moment a couple of days ago when he got his first major league hit, a home run, at age 29 off of Diamondbacks pitcher Eury De La Rosa. However, despite the jubilation of such a moment he probably knew it was fleeting.
The Padres have to make a series of roster moves this offseason in order to trim the roster to 40 players. The regular season offers the protection of the 60 day DL and the restricted list (which Cabrera was on due to his suspension), but the offseason requires that these players be put back on the 40 man roster. Since there are already 40 players on that roster (minus the coming free agency of Ronny Cedeno and the retirement of Mark Kotsay) and 5 players on the 60 day DL that are under team control for 2014, some additional moves are forthcoming.
The last day to reinstate players from the 60 day DL to the 40 man roster is 5 days after the World Series.
