Most of the members of today's Padres lineup have had a good deal of success against today's opposing starter, San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong. Three of them have homered off of him -- one of them did it twice -- and only two are hitless against him. Of course that's because one of them has never faced him and the other guy has only seen him thrice. Here's how the numbers break down:
Will Venable: 6-13, 2 K
Chris Denorfia: 1-5, K
Jedd Gyorko: 1-3, K
Chase Headley: 4-11, 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K
Tommy Medica: nothing to see here
Jesus Guzman: 0-2, BB
Nick Hundley: 2-3, HR, 2 RBI
Alexi Amarista: 3-6, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
All together, today's eight starters (and starting pitcher Burch Smith) have combined to go 17-43 (.395) with a double and four home runs. Over his long and strange career, Vogelsong is 3-4 with a 5.96 ERA in 15 games, seven of them starts, against San Diego. That's right in line with his 3-6 record with a 5.90 ERA against everybody this year, so he looks ripe for the picking. That or he'll throw a perfect game or something because baseball is weird like that.
