08/23 Padres Preview: Game 128 vs. Chicago

David Banks

The Padres were able to close out their series against the Pirates with a win on Wednesday afternoon. Now after their off day yesterday, they will welcome the Cubs to Petco Park for a three-game set. Edinson Volquez will get the start tonight  and looks to remain undefeated against Chicago. In seven career starts against them, he is 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA, though he wasn't too sharp in his outing at Wrigley Field earlier this year. He gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings, but it was still enough to get the win. Hopefully his past success against the Cubs will help him tonight because he hasn't had much success overall this season. He has a 3.12 ERA over his last three starts, but continues to post one of the worst overall ERAs in the league this year at 5.72. He's also had trouble going deep into games, only pitching past the sixth inning once in the past two months. His last time out kept the Mets to just two runs on seven hits, but only lasted five innings on the mound.

Edwin Jackson has had it even harder than Volquez lately. He's coming off a loss in which he gave up three runs (only one earned) and walked four in six innings at Wrigley. Prior to that, he suffered two rough outings on the road, combining for 11 runs given up in ten innings of work. He pitched in that game against Volquez earlier this year and was roughed up for eight runs on 11 hits, lasting just 4 2/3 innings. He has yet to record a win against San Diego, going 0-4 with a 5.56 ERA in seven career starts against them.

The series kicks off at 7:10 tonight.
